From the Worthy Podcast
Start with a brief intro about musicals. The thing with The Broadway Melody is that it’s the first movie musical ever, despite how poor it is. So maybe like a 1-2 paragraph intro about the importance of music and sound in film. (I have a rough written one below but feel free to make changes/write your own, maybe this episode you can do the introduction? I can continue doing them too) Considering that this is also the first film to win Best Picture that had sound
I think jumping right into the film this time would work better cause we already know about the history of the Academy from Ep. 1. Two things that are positives that stand out to me are that the film is the first musical to win and that it did featured a colored sequence for “The Wedding of the Painted China Doll” number but that print is lost. There is a YouTube video that recreates it, but not the most accurate.
Then go into the changes of the 2nd ceremony. Some fast facts about it:
No film that was nominated won more than 1 award at the ceremony, which is the only time that has ever happened
Only one Best Picture category
No Honorary/Special award
